Bay Bee

by Janel

A little angel
with big blue eyes
smiles at her mommy as she nods her head
with agreement
to nothing
in particular.

"Can you say baby?" I ask.
"Say baby," her mommy adds.

She looks up and smiles,
wrinkling her nose,
"Bay-bee," she says,
clapping her hands,
"Bay-bee."

"Yeah!" I say,
all excited, "High-five!"

She slaps her hands
gently against mine
and genuinely laughs
with a wrinkled nose grin.

She's almost sixteen months old
and she walks with ease,
learning how to talk
one word
at a time.

And now she has
her very own cell phone,
with a mirror inside,
she hands it to me
after it rings.

"Is it for me?" I ask
as I take it from her,
I put it to my ear
and hear music playing.

"I think I'm on hold," I say,
"They call me and then
put me on hold,
can you believe that?"

She laughs.

After a moment
I give it back
to her,
"It's for you," I say.

She takes it in her hands
and puts it to her ears,
"Hi!" She says
and then
throws the phone
on the floor.

"She must've been
disconnected," I say.

She nods her head,
smiles and laughs.

"Bay-bee,"
she says again,
"Bay-bee!"

Her mommy claps
and we all smile
as we listen to her say
"Bay-bee,"
over and again.

"Bay-bee,"
she says once more,
"Bay-bee!"
