It was the movement of your hands
That first caught my eye.
The rise and fall of your wrists
Acting out some innocent grey memory
Surrounded by men and women
Tawdrily regaled
In the dull threadbare room.

But to me
You had wings.

An exquisite butterfly resting
On a dust filled crevice.

When you smiled
Colour seemed to swirl around you and you rose;
Poised and perfect
Through the smog of circumstance
Onto a plane of beauty.

Once I caught your toe
And we rose together
Into the night air.
