As I mentioned in my earlier post titled "Hollywood Whippings", most of the whippings shown in movies or on TV are not very realistic, and viewing them provides me little satisfaction.
However, I recently bought a DVD that is an exception to this. The title of that movie is "Caged Men". It is a Canadian film, initially released in 1971, and re-released on DVD in 2006 on the Code Red label. The information on the package indicated that the movie was about a young straight man (rightly imprisoned) whose body was lusted after by sex-starved inmates in the prison. It appeared that it would mostly involve "vanilla sex", films of which don't excite me all that much.
As I watched the movie, I was expecting it to be an X-rated porno film, but it soon became apparent that it was an R-rated B-movie. With one exception, all the sexual scenes are innuendo only (mainly verbal), and that one exception is when the main character is forcibly raped (sodomized) by a brutal guard while being held down by several other inmates. Presumably, because of the "R" rating, all you see of this rape are the facial and vocal reactions of the victim.
However, the movie redeemed itself for me when the main character's cellmate (also straight) beats up another inmate who tries to put the make on him. As a result, he is taken to an isolated room where a prison official and 4 guards are in attendance. The official tells him that the warden has sentenced him to 10 strokes of the lash. The official asks him if he would like to say anything before the sentence is carried out, but he just replies, "Let's get it over with". So I was expecting the usual stoic Hollywood response to the lash (Alan Ladd - style). I was surprised when the prisoner was ordered to drop his pants. So it became evident his punishment was going to be an ass whipping, rather than a flogging. He is forced to lie over a cushion-like device on the floor, while 2 of the guards appear to place his hands and feet in unseen restraints.
When those 2 guards move out of the way, one can see the prisoner's rather attractive ass, slightly elevated above the rest of his body. The official then hands the "whip" to a big heavy guard to administer the punishment. That guard unwinds the whip and begins applying the lashes. Contrary to my expectation of a stoic response from the prisoner, he responds to every lash with loud screams, involuntary jerking movements of his body, and his eyes squeezed closed ever-so-tightly. Watching this, I thought, "Finally, a movie where the prisoner responds to a whipping the way I probably would!".
Now, to the gritty details, both positive and negative.
On the positive side:
(1) Excellent sound effects during the whipping including the whooshing sound the whip makes as it travels through the air and the slapping sound it makes as it strikes the prisoner's ass.
(2) With every stroke of the whip, the camera is focused on either the prisoner or the punishment guard, and usually both. No strokes are wasted on "reaction shots" of the other witnesses to the whipping.
(3) Twice during the whipping, the camera zooms in on the prisoner's ass so you see the whip striking his ass, leaving its tell-tale mark each time.
(4) The guard that administers the whipping is a big, heavy man, just the kind of guy you'd expect to give the whipping.
(5) That guard is obviously sadistic and gets pleasure from applying the lash. And he seems to be swinging the whip with the maximum force.
Now, to the negative details:
(1) Most frustrating, it's not clear to me what the instrument of punishment actually is. I've only called it a "whip" for lack of a better word. It is first seen coiled up into a perfect circle when held by the prison official. When the punishment guard unwinds it, it is about 3 feet long. It is obvious that it is not a braided whip. At one point, I thought it might be a rubber hose of small diameter, but when it was being swung, it seemed to be a narrow flat strip of "something".
(2) When the prisoner is being tied down, I wish they had shown actual restraints, rather than mimicking their use.
(3) One time, it appears that the guard has aimed the whip too high, and it seems to strike the prisoner's upper back, which is covered by his shirt. And once or twice, his aim appears to be too short and the whip just passes through the air on the prisoner's left side.
(4) A couple times, the timing seemed to be slightly off between the sound of the whip striking the prisoner's ass and the prisoner's response to being struck.
(5) A couple times during the whipping, the prisoner's head makes an odd circular movement as though he were trying to shake off the pain of the lash. It did not seem very natural to me.
(6) After the prisoner's response to the final lash, I would have expected some residual crying or moaning from the prisoner. But instead, he just flops his head down like he's playing dead.
I've only included the negative remarks because I'm a nit-picker. I wouldn't let them deter you from acquiring this better than average whipping scene. Those seeking a great film with a great story and great acting should look elsewhere. For those primarily interested in the sex, I think you'll find the film promises more than it delivers. However, those of you whose primary focus is on corporal punishment may get some satisfaction from the film.
