Subject: The Making of "Dad's Belt"

For those of you who don't watch movies on DVD, it has become almost routine for outtakes, deleted scenes, and documentaries on the making of the film to be included as Special Features on the DVD. I'm not sure this trend has had a positive effect. If anything, it has destroyed the viewer's illusion that movies, which are now considered classic masterpieces, have arisen full-blown, but are, instead, the result of many compromises and revisions, and much editing.

Although my stories are certainly not in that league, I thought it might be useful to share with readers some of the convolutions my stories have gone through before I finally posted them on this forum. And, for that purpose, I'll use my most recent story, "Dad's Belt".

First of all, I believe my subconscious mind has worked on each story before any of it is ever written down because, when I do start writing, usually about 80% of the story is written down at a single sitting, without any hesitation. Most of my time is spent on the remaining 20%. And that applies to "Dad's Belt" as well.

In the beginning was the word, but in my case, it was two words: Dad's Belt. They were the original inspiration for my story. I'm sure those words evoke some emotionally-charged images for most guys, even guys who grew up like I did, with an absent father due to divorce. I imagine many guys find the idea of a male authority figure very appealing: a man that exudes masculine energy. He imparts some of that energy with his belt to our buttocks when he feels the need to impress on us one of life's many lessons.

After having second thoughts when I released several of my early stories on this forum prematurely, I've generally held on to my stories for at least a month before posting them. I always manage to find something that needs improving. At the very least, I need to correct my numerous typos. (Don't expect spellchecking software to catch all of your typos.) Also, I have an unfortunate tendency to use the same words or phrases over and over again. So, I try to vary my words somewhat. Even more disconcerting is when I discover that I've used the exact same phrase in one of my earlier stories. Having posted close to 50 texts (some fact, some fiction) on this forum, this is more of a problem than you might realize. (There are only so many ways to describe the pain of a whipping. The phrase "It hurts like hell" comes readily to mind.) I actually held on to "Dad's Belt" for 2 whole months before I decided it was ready to be released. I reread it and made changes to it almost every day during that time. Another of my favorite stories, "The Whipping Post at Fort Mescalero" (now in this forum's archives), I held on to even longer before I released it.

The final stages of editing a story often involve deleting sentences or even entire paragraphs that I thought were quite clever at the time I wrote them but which I later felt detracted from the progression or the intentions of my story. A few times, I've trashed a whole story when I didn't feel it was going anywhere. And there may have been a few stories which I should have trashed but didn't.

Unlike many of my stories on this forum, in "Dad's Belt", I decided very early on to resist the urge to inject any explicit sexual references into the story. However, one thing I didn't rule out until very late in the writing process was the possibility that Dad may not have been a typical father of the time who honestly believed that corporal punishment was a necessary part of raising a child. Instead, I left the reader with the uneasy suggestion that Dad may have actually enjoyed subjecting helpless kids to the sting of his belt. This intimation followed the last paragraph of my story (where Dad was consoling Jerry after his whipping). I originally had a short paragraph narrated by Dad's son as follows:

After Jerry left, one nagging thought remained in my mind: When Dad went downstairs to call Jerry's dad on the phone, did he really call Jerry's dad or did he just pretend to call him?

As you can see, that puts Dad's motivations in a whole different light! I eventually decided to eliminate that intimation (as well as any explicit sexual references) so that readers could enjoy my story "guilt-free".

I have a few suggestions for guys who would like to write a spanking story but have had trouble getting it started.

(1) Don't type your text directly into the forum's inbox. Instead, type it into a draft email which you can send to yourself. That way, you can correct all your typos and make any other revisions before you post it. I prefer to proofread printed copies of my drafts. I seem to catch more problems on paper than I do on the computer screen. Then, when you are finally satisfied with your text, you can use a "right-click copy and paste" to enter your text into the forum's inbox.

(2) First, try writing a factual account of one of your real experiences with corporal punishment. I think it's easier to write a factual account than a fiction story. Besides relating the "mechanical" details of the punishment, describe your physical reactions to it and include your thoughts and fears before and during the punishment. Then, try using your own experiences or your own fantasies as source material for your story.

(3) Even if your story is a total fantasy, try to make it somehow "believable" or you will lose the reader's interest. This may be the most difficult part of writing a story.

(4) If stories seem to elude you, try practicing abstinence (and that includes your hand too) for a couple weeks. There's nothing like abstinence to stimulate one's desires and fantasies.

(5) If your story stalls at some point in spite of your efforts, put it aside for a week and work on something else instead. (This will give your subconscious mind time to work on it.) Have you ever tried to recall something, but the harder you try to remember it, the more difficult it becomes? Then, if you give up trying and focus your attention on something else, the thing you were trying to remember suddenly pops into your head without any effort. It's the same idea.
