I'm a former special ed teacher. Learned quite a bit about kids.

Kids innate responses to certain stimuli vary and no known genetic or environmental predisposition seems to be a factor. For example, take two preverbal neonates. Both are too young to have left the hospital. A loud sound occurs. One will cry, and the other will look toward the source curiously. If you make this test with thousands of kids, you'll find each kid has the same reaction each time. Expand the sample size and control for all sorts of variables and you learn:
* Kids (and parents) have certain innate behavioral tendencies
* These may influence later, more complex behaviors of adults and children.
* These complex behaviors may be incompatible.
* If so, the adult and kid will rub each other the wrong way, in a way that doesn't happen with siblings and the parent.
* Good parent, good kid, but incompatible tendencies under the skin.
* If you both recognize the reality of this, you can learn to work within it.

Can I cite the research? Sadly, no, it was decades ago.

But if this suggestion resonates with you, it's probably worth investigating.

Good luck,

MM
