In the consensual, adult erotic spanking arena, the general word I got as I became acquainted was that it was essential for spankers to be spanked at least once in a while to achieve some measure of empathy. So I took the advice and by now, I'd rather be spanked than spank!

I was not spanked as a child and have not spanked children, so I can't contribute to that part of the discussion. I agree, an excellent, thought provoking question.
