Interesting question: should the goal alone be the reward. I would think that would depend on how goal orientated the mentee is. If he/she thinks it is an important objective, then it should be sole focus. Further incentive should not be needed. That said, the mentee may 'buy into' placing the same importance on the goal as the mentor does. In that case we are talking about educating the mentee and additional incentive may be desirable. So the carrot along with the stick may have a place in mentoring.
