I know one person who referred to a cane as "a reusable switch."

I have never felt a cane but I have sparingly used a cane; I think it is a very brutal tool that can cause quite a bit of damage if not used carefully.

Markings on a bottom are always caused by the edge of the implement, whether it is a belt, a narrow paddle or a cane. The wider the paddle, the less likelihood of marking if there is a decreased probability of edge connecting to buttock. In the case of the cane and switch, they are ALL edge.

I was switched just one time in my life, three stripes across the backs of my legs. Ironically, they were delivered to one of my sisters, my brother and me by our Mom who NEVER disciplined us, but she did this ONE time and I think it was the most painful I had ever experienced. To this day, I'm not sure which hurt the worst - that switching or the only paddling I ever got in school, in my Senior year. They were different kinds of pain, but both were almost unbearable. The switch was kind of like a line-of-fire cutting pain, the paddle was absolutely explosive.

I also remember the switch marks (welts) on the back of our legs, seemed to have lasted a very long time, maybe two weeks before they completely disappeared. It was summer time and we were in shorts every day. Neighbors would come by to visit and look on approvingly at our marks, believing some "good parenting" had taken place. Today, there would be a rush to contact the authorities, as surely we were being "abused."

As for a comparison, the switch is light and whippy; it's impact is limited to a superficial burning line-of-fire across the skin, but it is not heavy enough to cause any deep tissue bruising and much less likely than the cane to cause any skin breakage. The cane OTOH, is large and sturdy enough to cause a deeper level of pain and potential for both the breaking of the skin and bruising. Whereas the switch is all but completely ineffective over clothing, a cane can make an impression over clothing, but IMO it should not be used except on the bare, just so it can be carefully gauged because the potential for inadvertent damage IS so great.
