Whispers of Strength

"Don't let the tears fall,
don't let the tears fall."
She chants quietly
as she lay motionless
in her bed.

"Don't let the tears fall,
don't let the tears fall."
She whispers to herself
as waves of ache
wash over her.

"Don't let the tears fall,
don't let the tears fall."
She says again
as she curls
into a ball.

"Don't let the tears fall,
don't let the tears fall."
She repeats once more,
as if saying it
will make them stop.

"Just sleep, just sleep."
She murmurs incoherently
as she clenches
her eyes shut,
warding off the tears.

No matter how many times
she tells herself,
no matter how hard she fights,
the tears still glisten in her eyes,
falling from her trembling heart.

Still, she fights the darkness
overwhelming her soul,
refusing to let it
take hold of her,
trying her best to ignore.

Morning will come
and her light will shine,
she'll smile, she'll laugh,
she will be okay,
stronger than she was before.

But for tonight
she let the tears fall
as she waits for sleep
to overtake her
wandering mind.

"Just sleep, just sleep."
She utters again,
unaware that
whispers of strength
are flourishing within.
