Why did U.S. decision makers decide that allocating billions of dollars to the rebuilding of Europe after World War II was a good idea? Because this type of "good samaritian" investment would help the U.S economy and morale in the long run. By preventing Europe from plunging further into economic hardship, we would encourage trans-Atlantic trade, and possibly prevent the spread of Communism, a huge fear among American citizens at the time.
