Rick provided a link to this excellent article at another forum back in 2007, but I don't recll if it's been mentioned here at this forum or not.

Halloween would have been a great time to revisit this article, but I just missed that chance by a few weeks. Today, however, is the birthday of Boris Karloff, as good as time as any for discussing monsters and the like.
