Subject: Ultimate Stooges trivia question for Tim

Did the Stooges ever go widescreen with their shorts and if so, when did it begin?

That is a tough one, I will have to work on it for awhile.

I am thinking the Stooges compilation "Stop, Look and Laugh!" (1960) was released in widescreen format. The same for the trio's motion pictures (1959-1965), but I am unsure about the original short subjects.

In 1953, all movie studios went to anamorphic (widescreen) to compete against the newfound television industry. The Stooges shorts began filming widescreen in 1953. You would never know unless you have the official DVDs from Sony. Screen Gem's old distribution prints and subsequent video masters were cropped to blow up the image for 4:3 TV. If you ever grab Stooges DVD, starting with Vol. 7, you can see it for the first time.

Ah ha, 1953 was gonna be my first guess. Or maybe 19th guess! Nyuk.

Seriously, I didn't know about the change to widescreen in 1953. That was around the same time 3D got big, which was also meant to compete with television.
