The chaotic pie battle of Half-Wits Holiday (1947) has to be among my favorites. Columbia must have liked it too because they subsequently used footage from it in The Pest Man Wins and Scheming Schemers, as well as in the remake Pies and Guys.

Mrs. Smythe-Smythe: "Young man, what's wrong? You act as if the Sword of Damocles is hanging over your head."

Moe: "Lady, you must be psychic!"

This memorable exchange implies that Moe might be familiar with the ancient anecdote, which means that his character is more literate than we imagine. Plus he has the wisdom to move when a pie is about to fall from the ceiling, lol!

Moe's wife wrote the lines for he and Mrs. Smythe-Smythe. Evidently, she was very literate herself! I have to admit, that's the worst and most innocent way a discarded pie can cream a person's face! LOL.
