As with all institutions it varies, I would recommend that you get in touch with the NT's Gardens section in Cirencester and talk to the people there and balance this with talking to the staff at the gardens. With the garden staff, as with staff in any others in any organisation, there wil be a variety of views (some with axes to grind) so speak to a few. Also think about botanic gardens, hiorticultural societies as well as the better zoos and theme parks where you can extend your career. It is worth the effort I moved from working pricking out at a nursery and grounds maintenance in local authorities via Kew Gardens and others and I currently lecture for the University of Birmingham. Horticulture is a wonderful career and you can take it as far as you want to with a some application, I wish you luck in it and please feel free to e-mail me if I can help in any other way!
