The other limits are:

1000 lines per message (but that's just how we have it set, by default -- it doesn't say there's any "max".

and

400k (the default was, I think, 200k) for total size of messages in the main index. I guess that means we can have another 400k in each of the 10 "archives".

So, I believe what eventually happens is:

Our oldest messages get kicked back into an "archives" when we reach 600 threads, or 800 messages, or 400k size -- whichever comes first, I assume.

After that, the messages will still be readable, by going to page 2-10. See the group I originally saw, the motorcycle one, that has numbers 1-10 at the top-right, for visitors to see older posts.

And, we have a setting (which can be changed) that puts a "Post a response" form on archived messages, so that if somebody posts a "new" reply to an "old" message, the "old" message gets moved-up into the "active" forum (so that people will see the new reply).
