All the streets in Gelnhausen are cobblestoned. It was much prettier than I remember. Up on the old obermarkt, the old wine cellar is still there, where I first tasted German wine. I didn't find any place that sold schlascik in Gelnhausen, but I did see it in other towns.
On the corner where the Fischerstube used to be (where you and Gary used to play for what people would put in the hat) there is now a bar that has jazz on the weekends. Anita lives just a couple of doors up from that place in the narrow street that runs up the hill.

I also went to the Kaserne. All the blue barracks have been painted brown. I went into the one I used to stay in. It was all offices. In fact all these buildings are offices. The Gelnhausen police department is housed in the old Headquarters Battery building of the 6th artillery.

I also went into the building you used to stay in. Angelika had to go there to pick up a paycheck. It was all offices. And all those 48th Infantry buildings running up the hill are there, with different businesses in them and they're all painted white.

The old service club where the monks first met is still there but it's now a factory of some kind. I hardly recognized it.

The field at the front of the kaserne where we played baseball and football is still there. It is now a park. The lake is still there where it was.

All the family housing is still being used by families of GIs who are stationed in Budigen. There is still a guard house and a German guard at the front of the buildings. They are still the same color.

And the tank park has lots of small buildings with various businesses in them. It's actually an industrial park. The fence you used to climb over at the corner of the kaserne - so you could play at the Maxim Bar - is still there. I was thinking about attaching a plaque to it stating, "Dave Dave used to climb over the fence at this spot."
