Chinese teachers arrive for language, culture instruction

This school year, the world will be a much smaller place to students in the Dyersburg City School System, with two teachers from China joining the faculty and providing a unique education to students in all four of the city schools.

Partnering with Michigan State University's Confucius Institute, the city school system is the first in the state of Tennessee to offer Mandarin Chinese. The opportunity not only teaches the language to students on the high school level, but provides a rare chance to learn the culture from native Chinese educators.

Whether the classroom is located in Beijing, China or Dyersburg, Tenn., the excitement of new teachers Yaqi Hao and Yu Liu proves that the love of teaching is the same throughout the world.

Arriving in Dyersburg just in time to begin the new academic year, the pair took part in the new-teacher orientation at the Professional Development Center on Monday morning.

With just enough time to catch their breath, settle in and receive a large dose of Southern hospitality before the school year starts, the duo were the first to say "welcome" by offering an invitation into their classrooms to parents and residents interested in the language and culture of China.

Yaqi Hao already has one-half year of teaching in the United States under her belt. She spent six months in San Diego, Calif., where she taught at an area primary school and served as a teacher's assistant at San Diego State University. Hao taught in San Diego as a part of Han Ban, the Chinese Language Consultant International program. Transferring to the Michigan State program, she will teach at Dyersburg Primary School and Dyersburg Intermediate School in the 2008-2009 academic year.

Hao's hometown is in the Shanxi Province in central China, a region with history dating back to 772 B.C.

"I have been living and studying in Beijing for six years," said Hao. "I am an honor graduate and a graduate student at Peking University. I come here as a volunteer teacher. I like children. I want to teach. Also, I want to enrich my personal experience, to see more about America and meet more American people."

Yu Liu grew up in Chang-chun, the capital of the Jilin Province, located in northeast China. The city is also steeped in tradition, best known as home to the China's last emperor.

"I just arrived in the states six days ago," said Liu. "I worked as a college teacher in Chang-chun, mainly teaching English and sometimes teaching foreigners Chinese."

When a friend told Liu about the Confucius Program, she applied.

"My friend informed me about this new kind of project," said Liu. "I love culture and American history, so I applied to this program and interviewed and I passed. I found out one month ago I was coming to the United States. Even I couldn't believe it."

Liu will teach at Dyersburg High School and Dyersburg Middle School in the 2008-2009 school year.

NO ONE TARGETED THE SCHOOL JUST USE OF AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS LEARNING CHINESE FROM A COMMUNIST COUNTRY HAS NO PLACE HERE I WOULD RATHER THE MONEY BE SPENT ON HEALTHCARE FOR THE ELDERLY ,SICK CHILDREN , OR THE TROOPS FIGHTING TO PROTECT THESE RIGHTS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN THREE KIDS THAT MIGHT GRASP THE LANGUAGE.THANKS TO WALMART AND 40 YEARS OF TIME YOUR COMMENTS CAN BE MADE TO SUPPORT THE ARRIVAL OF TWO CHINESE TEACHERS FROM A COMMUNIST COUNTRY OVER U.S. TAX DOLLARS BEING USED TO SUPPORT THIS ISSUE WHICH STILL HAS NO PURPOSE HERE . You address important issues but blaming the school for everything from Mexican drugs to home foreclosures is quite a stretch, don't you think? Do you actually believe money is wasted when students learn about our world? Were there no cultural exchange programs when you were in school? I remember Hidi, the foreign exchange student from Germany. Talk about cultural exchange, she was so pretty I got a job at the radio station so I could play her a song. Danke Schon!

NO TAX PAYERS ARE DOOMED BECAUSE SOMEONE ACTUALLY THOUGHT WE MIGHT NEED TO KNOW CHINESE . I've wondered about Chinese script and its formation, meaning and interconnections. Aren't you curious if it has an upper and lower case. Some linguists believe that writing was invented in China. And we thought it was only the firecracker.

OK NOW GET OUT YOUR ABACUS . MINES BROKEN (MADE IN CHINA ) IN A CLASS OF THIRTY STUDENTS MAYBE 10% WILL GRASP READING AND WRITING BACKWARDS . THE OTHER 90% WILL STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN A DECENT GRADE AVERAGE IN CHINESE WHILE OTHER GRADES WILL SLUMP TO COMPENSATE FOR A LANGUAGE THAT DOES NOT BORDER US ON THE NORTHERN ,OR SOUTHERN CONTINENTS. The students in the Chinese class will not drop their other classes. They still be learning math, the sciences and maybe even the use of upper and lower case letters. I think you will agree, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Hats off to Dyersburg for allowing our students to advance into a new era of of learning. This is just outstanding!! bizcuitzngravy....well...your blog name is enough to tell me all I need to know. I am sure your kids will want to take a low paying factory job in this city so they can be close to your great breakfast menu. Cody H and Choctaw,, you are right on target! Congrats to DHS for bringing in another option for foreign language. Chinese is the new language of business, as their economy is booming. This will also look great on college applications that a Chinese class has been taken!

THE CITY BUDGET IS AT A LOSS, SO WE PAY FOR TWO CHINESE TEACHERS TO COME HERE ,AND TEACH MADARIN CHINESE .AT LEAST OUR CHILDREN WILL NOT BE BEHIND IN JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN CHINESE FACTORY'S SINCE ALL OUR FACTORY'S AND PRODUCTS ARE MADE IN CHINA .

This is wonderful. I hope they speak English very well! I hate to try and do business ............on the phone with some i can,t understand, just like some people hate when my spelling is off. BUT welcome to Dyersburg.
