Neighbor's turkey attacks boy; owner relinquishes poultry to humane society

A turkey attacked a 5-year-old boy and his father as they attempted to enter their home in Trimble on Wednesday afternoon.

The large domesticated turkey, which was supposed to be penned up in a neighbor's yard, was about as tall as the boy, Trimble Police Chief Donna Faulkner said.

The turkey tried to jump on the boy as he and his father walked from their vehicle to their front door. The turkey managed to peck the boy's shoe before the father managed to lift his son onto their front porch. The father was trying to position himself between his son and the turkey.

"The turkey flew up on the porch after the boy," Faulkner said.

The father climbed onto the porch, too. He kicked and stomped at the turkey as he struggled to unlock the front door and usher his son inside.

A second turkey, much smaller and female, had accompanied the male turkey into the yard but did not attack the boy.

No one and no turkeys were injured in the fracas, but the boy was petrified, the police chief said.

"If the turkey had gotten a hold of him, it would have hurt that boy," Faulkner said.

The poultry owners retrieved their turkeys and returned them to their pens. Both owners were cited with allowing livestock to run at-large in the city limits.

The large, mostly-white male turkey belonged to Jimmy Scobey, who lives at the intersection of Mill and Baldridge. The smaller female turkey belongs to Claude Scobey, who lives at the end of Seltz Street.

The men appeared in Trimble city court Thursday night. They relinquished both turkeys to the Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society.

The humane society had taken possession of both turkeys on Wednesday afternoon. They were placed in one of the shelter's large dog runs, between a couple of Labrador puppies and a slender mother dog with a batch of young puppies. The male turkey puffed up his feathers and spread his tail fan in an aggressive stance for most of the first 24 hours he was there.

Shelter Supervisor Derrick Avery said the attacking turkey is a "first" for the humane society. He said animal control officers have never been asked to take possession of a vicious turkey.

This was not the first time, however, that the male turkey had attacked the family in Trimble. Faulkner said the turkey attacked the father last year, chasing him from the house to his truck. The turkey continued attacking the truck after the father jumped inside and shut the door.

Faulkner said the turkey also has been known to chase children on bicycles.

Trimble allows livestock in the city limits, but all livestock must be confined or penned. "We're probably one of the last towns in Tennessee that allows livestock in the city limits," Faulkner said.

Well, I have to agree it is not funny because of the little one. BUT, lol, the over all story is pretty darn funny.

We had two turkeys when I was growing up, and I remember my older sister was being attacked by them and I was watching my mom beat them off of her with a broom. So turkeys can be aggressive.

Hope the little guy is ok, but yea this was a funny story otherwise.

My aunt has a permanent scar on her face as a result of being attack as a child by a rooster. I dont think this is a laughing matter due to the fact an impressionable child is involved.

aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaa, that is too funny, how did his little feet get on the pedals. I laughed till I hurt. I swear, this story has got to somehow make it onto Leno.

I swear...!!! Poor child will probably never eat turkey again if he did b4. This is the funniest s#*! I have ever heard. Not because it was messing with the little guy, but just to picture the man trying to get the door open, get his son to safety, while trying to fight off a crazy turkey, who's female, was sitting back watching. Like the little dude looked at his woman wrong or something. The strange thing is, the two birds belong to different residents in Trimble. I don't know how close they live, but them birds must have been coating for a while to be meeting up and hanging out like that!! LOLLOLLOL!!!

Hahahahaha....I didn't read that the Turkey had one of it's partners there for back up in case things got tough!!! That is hilarious!!!!!

What if it had a Phillies hat on cocked sideways, a gold chain and it's own theme music....I'm thinking this could be a hit SNL skit!!

If I'm being harrassed by a turkey with a vendetta...I'm either gonna kill it or move! You can't allow yourself to be punked out by a turkey!

The Trimble Police should of at least had the owner put a beware of Turkey sign on their chain link fence!! You need to know when a rabid turkey might be lurking around the corner! Millions of innocent lives are lost in savage turkey attacks each year! Step up Dyer County!

"Faulkner said the turkey also has been known to chase children on bicycles."

Wonder how he got his little feet on the pedals?

I was attacked by a turkey when I was about that age, too. It's comical from the outside looking in, but to a child that's horrifying.

My mother didn't even bother worrying about what the owner of the turkey might think. She just grabbed a board up off the ground and swung away and killed the thing, then threw his body back over into their yard.

Looks like Thanksgiving might come early for that rogue turkey!Make some dressing with it and call me!

Why don't they just have a Turkey Dinner in Trimble......

Sounds like pass time to allow them only in the country. The little boy may not ever get over this, i,am so happy to know no one was harmed this time.
