Subject: Challenge of the Masked Racer

The second episode of the series, and among the best I have seen so far. There is a suspenseful midnight race between Speed Racer and Racer X during a fierce storm as part one concludes. Part two includes an informative black & white flashback sequence explaining how Rex Racer ended up becoming Racer X. The whole thing started with a terrible argument between Rex and Pops Racer. At one point Speed nearly learns the identity of Racer X, but is ambushed from behind before he can see Racer X's face. In another amusing sequence the crooks think they have captured Racer X, but upon the unmasking they are disappointed to find they have Speed Racer instead. An excellent episode with a touching conclusion.

And the episodes that established the relationship between Speed and Racer X that was one of the series' strongest issues. In the Japanese comic series, the final manga story has Racer X revealing himself to Speed. In the final episode, Race Around the World, Racer X says Speed suspected that he was his long-lost older brother, but wasn't sure, so now he will continue watching out for him. If you have the Mach Go Go Go manga set by DMP, you will see the final story I mentioned. What a mind-blower!
