I see the Cheetahs swung a deal with Richmond to get a solid left-handed hitting OF (Schmitz, .326, .428 OBA, 36 RBI). Part of the deal was a swap of 2002 first round draft picks.

I should know this but I don't: what is the gist of the Frontier League draft? From what pool of players are they picking? How many rounds? When is the draft held?

Anyone have information on how the tryouts went this past weekend? Like did anyone earn an invitation? There was a short piece in the Southtown on it Tuesday, that's all I read. Thanks.

Guy,

We did swap first-round picks with Richmond, taking us from 2 to 11 in the draft. We figured we wouldn't be able to find anyone better than Schmitz in the draft, so moving wasn't a problem. That .428 OBA is exactly what we need in the leadoff spot. Schmitz was an All-Star last year, so we've picked up 2 now, with Pichi Balet from Dubois.

The League draft and tryout camp, which Chad, Theo, Dana Forsberg and I just got back from tonight, works like this: All players work out in drills for their position on the first day, and some are invited to come back for the second day. The second day, we run two games, giving everyone a chance to showcase - most batters got 3-4 at bats and every pitcher pitched at least a half inning.

After the games, we draft a minimum of 2 players for each team. The Cheetahs drafted RHP Scott Nichols from Missouri in the first round (at #11) and RHP Mike Larson from Washington in the second round (at #14).

From last week's open tryout, we invited four players to come to a mid-week invitation tryout. I'm not sure who will be in camp, I know there was one OF, Shannon Brown, who showed very well in both camps.

So, we'll mix it up in training camp starting Wednesday and see what shakes out. Don't forget, we have exhibitions the 21st, 22nd and 26th, so you can see for yourself if we're better than last year. I think we are, but one never knows until the bats begin to swing.

Chuck
