Thought you'd all like to know!

Cheetahs name Moore 2003 Field Manager

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Cook County Cheetahs of the independent Frontier League named the League’s 2000 Manager of the Year, Mike Moore, as the team’s Field Manager for the 2003 season.

Moore, 32, was drafted in 1991 by the Cleveland Indians after playing three years as a catcher at West Virginia University. Following his career with the Indians, Moore played catcher and outfield with the Frontier League’s Johnstown Steal from 1995-97. He was selected to the 1995 FL All-Star team as the Steal won the 1995 League championship.

After retiring as a player, Moore served as a coach with West Virginia University and Oklahoma City University before becoming the Field Manager for the Johnstown Johnnies of the Frontier League for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Moore was named FL Manager of the Year in 2000, as Johnstown finished with the League’s best record, 48-36, and won the Frontier League championship.

After serving as hitting coach for the Florida Marlins’ Class A Jupiter Hammerheads in 2002, Moore was let go as the Marlins released their entire minor league coaching staff.

“We had been looking for a leader for a team we feel has a tremendous amount of returning talent,” said Cheetahs General Manager Chuck Heeman. “We started a real upswing last season, and we need to continue that in 2003. We’re lucky to have found someone who not only knows the Frontier League but has had very recent success in the League. It’s not often a championship manager comes along, and we’re glad Mike chose to come to the Cheetahs to continue his career.”

Moore lives in Tequesta, Florida, and will relocate to the Chicagoland area in March to take command of the Cheetahs field operations. In the off-season, Moore will be responsible for scouting and signing players to the 2003 training camp roster.

The Cheetahs also announced that the contract of right-handed relief pitcher Chad Bircher was traded to the North Shore Spirit (Lynn, MA) of the Northern League.

The Cheetahs added to its office staff with the appointment of J. Willms to fill the position of Director of Ticket Operations. Willms, who served as an intern for the Cheetahs during the 2002 season, replaces Kelley Currier, who has accepted a sales position with the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League.
