LYNN – The North Shore Spirit have signed their first player, outfielder/second baseman John Schmitz of San Mateo, Calif.
Schmitz, 27, who bats left and throws right, has played the last three years in the independent Frontier League. Last year, he hit .343 in 78 games and was a league All-Star with the Cook County (Ill.) Cheetahs. The 6-foot, 190-pound Schmitz was second in the league in on-base percentage at .473 and had 19 doubles, 32 RBI, 12 stolen bases and 57 walks.
In 2001, he played for the Richmond (Ind.) Roosters, hitting .326 with 19 doubles and 36 RBI. In 2000, he was a league All-Star with the Dubois County (Ind.) Dragons, hitting .312 with 10 doubles and 33 RBI.
Schmitz said he is heady player who puts a premium on studying opposing pitchers and getting on base, "I don't go up there hacking," he said. "I do my homework. I'm a scrappy guy, not a home run guy. My role is to get on base, steal bases when I have the opportunity and score runs."
“First, we are excited to have signed the first player in North Shore Spirit history”, added general manager Ben Wittkowski. “John gives us a player who is exactly what we hope our roster will consist of, that is, great numbers on the field, and an all-around good guy off the field”.
Schmitz played his college baseball at Sonoma State University and junior college at the College of San Mateo. At Sonoma State, he was a two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association all-league selection, hitting .326 and .358 in two seasons. At San Mateo, Schmitz hit .519 his sophomore year and was named a Junior College All-American. He won the Big Stick award as the best player in California and was also named Northern California Player of the Year. He was a two-time all-league selection with a .450 career batting average.
