Any news on the draft? I saw the number one pick was given up for an established catcher, sounds great! Also, I saw on the site that positions--starting pitching--has been somewhat designated, any other news on this or as far as other positions? Looking forward to the season.

The draft will take place Tuesday afternoon - we don't have choices in the first round (traded for Chuck Van Robays) or second round (traded to Rockford for Zack Riera), so it'll be a bit before we know what we have.

As far as designating the starting pitchers, four of the five are pretty obvious to us, the fifth is more of a competition - a good problem for us to have!

Well hopefully something comes of the draft! Great thing to have, on the webpage there are 5 designated as starters. Any idea with other positions other than pitching?? Maybe the draft will clear things up!

Josh,

It's good to be in a position where we have a pretty good idea who will be on the team. Honestly, there are probably 7-8 positions open, and that's very reassuring to know for Mike Moore and the coaching staff. Mike has done a fantastic job identifying and acquiring talent during the off-season.

It'd be very premature to say who will be the starters at what position, and the designations on the Web page are purely from what those pitchers have done in the past - they may not all end up being starters, or we may find someone else who would be better suited. For now, they come to camp in those slots.

So, what we are looking for in the draft is pretty limited - again, a good position for us to be in. We are looking very positive coming into the season, much more so than last year - and we had a pretty good team last year. The results could have been better last season, but you can't control injuries to pitchers and callups during the season.

I think people are going to miss something special if they don't catch us this season.

We drafted OF Dustin Bowling and RHP Jamie Queros in today's tryout draft. More information on them tomorrow!

I saw the news on the webpage and seems as if some talent was picked up. A lot of guys on the roster but that is a good sign. These new guys who were drafted must be sure in on the team because they were drafted by the team. Any news on these new guys? Where they fit??

I also see a lot of guys at catcher and outfield spots, any sure in players?

Josh,

As always, we're very hesitant to say who will 'for sure' be on the team or not. The truth is, you never know - sometimes guys come to camp hurt or out of shape or even just decide not to play. On the other hand, guys who seem to have little chance sometimes come through and kick butt. For instance, we had cut Nick Gontmaher last season in camp, and he came back to us 2 weeks into the season and turned out to be the best CF in the league.

We did draft two players in last year's camp too, and neither made it past the first week of the season, so being drafted is never a sure thing - the player still has to produce.

So, on April 4, it's not a good idea to project these things.

We can say that we are done signing players, save for the pitcher we picked up from River City (Adam Sokoll) yesterday in a trade for future considerations. We are only allowed to bring a certain number to camp, and for practical purposes, more than that gets too much to manage anyway - the players wouldn't get a fair look.

Mike Moore has a good idea of what spots need to be filled yet, and we're looking for one player there, and of course we have the tryout camp on May 3.

A lot of wordage there, but the bottom line is that while we can sit here and think we might know who will be on the team, you never know until they get to camp.

Thanks for the interest!
Chuck

Thanks for the information. Is there any news on these guys?? It's hard to find information of these guys and like to know more about them. Who is the pitcher that was picked up?? Do people usually get traded before camp?

As you stated, the drafted players made the team so the pitching staff looks to be bunched up with people, as does the catching scenario. Looking forward to great year!

Josh,

The pitcher, Jaime Quiros, played in the Northern League with Lincoln last season - didn't have the best stats, but you never know with another year of maturity.

Dustin Bowling played at IUPUI, but has no pro experience. I have to admit that I don't know that much about him, but trust Mike Moore's judgement on him.

As far as players getting traded before camp, we just traded for Adam Sokoll from River City, so yes, it does happen.. though I can't see us making a lot more player moves prior to camp.

Hope we answered some questions!
Chuck
