Hey Butch, are you familiar with where Precious was tested? I was just curious. I can't remember what they specialize in, I haven't checked out their site but I had Precious previous to Sam and recommended the folks who tested her. I was disappointed upon hearing details about the testing because I felt they really missed.

I think there may be some confusion here on which sport you are talking about and also on drives too... I understand the difference between Prey drive and defensive drive and all that jazz but there may be some confusion with Sam because it seems she may be only looking at protection work in the frame of "sport" only...where prey drive is often relied upon and many times the be all end all for different trainers...

I do know Precious was tested at a time when I myself would veer away from putting that kind of pressure on a dog, even in a testing environment. She was just over a year of age and as the breed goes this tends to be a time of serious adjustment for them where direction is crucial and leaving them out on a limb would, in my opinion, rattle even the better nerved untouched dogs out there. Boerboels and other Mastiff's aren't GSD's or other highly prey driven breeds...they mature slower on top of it so, either a pup out of a litter should be chosen by a trainer after some stimulus tests and whatnot be done and then encouraged from that point on by a KNOWLEDGEABLE trainer who understands the breed or at least who understands the differences between defensive dogs and prey driven GSD type dogs... To me that'd make an okay sport dog...I don't feel like a BB can really make much of an impact in the sport feild no matter the sport because they do lack prey drive or, rather, tend to work in Defensive drive...heavily.

Because the breed is more of a defensive breed though, I think that for them to work to the best of their ability in protection work they need to work out of the drive they were bred to work in which is defense... I'm still really new at this training type stuff and my understanding of drives is limited... From what I do understand though is that...a dog working in defense drive isn't going to make many points on a sport field... AM I correct in my thinking or???

Sara
