Laryssa, Nichola, Christie, and Cassidy are ready to ready to start the trip. And Brittany, Catherine, and Amy are also ready to go. Faith, Tiffany and Cristie are in their places. Our first group pictures t the Waco VA Hospital before we head out to visit the vets in their rooms. Waco VA Hospital Temple VA Hospital Austin at Hotel Day AT The State Capitol Teens wearomg blue. She held the title of Miss Teen West Texas 2000. She won the “Horizon Most Talented Dancer” (for First year Contestants) and was 14th Place at the 2000 Miss Teen Texas Pageant. In 2001, Julia held the title of Miss Teen Northeast Tarrant County, was a Preliminary Talent Winner, and won the “Best Overall Dancer Award” at the 2001 Miss Teen Texas Pageant. In 2002, Julia held the title of Miss Teen Fort Worth, was a Preliminary Swimsuit Winner at the 2002 Miss Teen Texas Pageant, and also won the title of Miss Teen Texas 2002. She was obviously an incredible dancer and contestant, and the Miss Texas State Franchiseholders Association (former sponsors of the Miss Teen Texas Program) was so proud of Julia for winning the title of Miss Teen Texas 2002 because of her hard work and dedication. But as we all know, although nobody is perfect, Miss Teen Texas (now Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen) is expected to be a role model) to our youth. The circumstances were unfortunate, but after winning the title of Miss Teen Texas on July 2, 2002, and after much anguish by everybody involved with the program and the attempt to “do the right thing” for Julia as well as preserve the quality of the Miss Teen Texas Program, Julia relinquished her title a month later on August 3, 2002. Her predicament captured national media attention and the State Association had no other choice than to accept her resignation. I personally admire Julia and applaud her for deciding to compete again last summer at the 2008 Miss Texas Pageant because she knew it would be an uphill climb. I also want to congratulate Julia for winning the “True Beauty” reality show. I have always thought Julia had a very bright future. All 2009 Franchise Holders, Miss & Teen Title Holders are requested to attend the Winter Meeting on SUNDAY, JANUARY 11th. The meeting will be held at Crowne Plaza Suites Hotel, 700 Avenue H East, Arlington (north side of Interstate 30 near Six Flags). For the first time in over forty years the Miss Texas Pageant will not be held in Fort Worth. The 2009 Miss Texas Pageant and 2009 Miss Teen Texas Pageant will be held in Arlington at University of Texas - Arlington, Texas Hall. The dates are the same, arrival June 27th and finals on Saturday, July 4th. MTO has a five year commitment as of this date from the City of Arlington. All the details, etc will be shared at the upcoming Franchise Holders & Title Holders Meeting about the move. I don't see how the City and the University combine their contracts. I'm surprised it isn't at the Arlington Convention Center or at Johnnie High's venue. (Although I don't think Johnnie's theatre has enough backstage/dressing room space for the average 50 something contestants and additional performers) Will it be televised this year??? Lots of space, lockers, mirrors, bathrooms, etc... Everything is much better at UTA including the backstage staging area! At Will Rogers the staging area was cramped but at UTA there's lots of space for staging. They would have 3 or more dance groups practing their dance just off stage something you could never have done at Will Rogers. The only issue I see would be for Rebecca & Sydney - @ WR they would have dressing rooms right off stage for the quick changes they have to do. The Duncanville/Ellis County Angels… The second group of visiting titleholders that I was able to pull together on Saturday night. The first group of Teen Titleholders… And the first group of Miss Titleholders… Jessica and Nicholle at visitation… Another beautiful group of Texas Titleholders at visitation. Jim finally gets out from behind the camera and gets a picture with Nicholle and Jessica. A group teens starting to get a little “gitty” at visitation. We found two new Teens to add to out group. Some little Princesses meeting new friends at visitation. Each of the State Titleholders is introduced at visitation and its now Rebecca’s turn on the stage. Rebecca blows a kiss to everybody in the audience. Sam Haskell tells Rebecca that she won the “Miss Congeniality Award” that is voted on by all the other State Titleholders. WAY TO GO BECCA!!! Once inside the theater we grab a quick picture of them with the Miss America Stage in the background. I was finally able to get a picture of Rebecca’s signs that they hung up inside the theater. They moved them from their original location in the balcony. They had 17 former Miss America Titleholders on-stage Saturday night plus one judging and one assisting the auditors. Rebecca’s on-stage introduction at Miss America on Saturday night. And as seen from the TV monitors inside the theater. Miss Indiana, Katie Stam’s on-stage introduction at Miss America on Saturday night. And as seen from the TV monitors inside the theater. I think you’ll see Katie again tonight… Here is Miss Arkansas, Ashlen Batson with her on-stage introduction. And again from the TV monitor inside the theater. Our special guest emcee, Mario Lopez has made his way to the stage and the girls are staying really cool. And we go to our first commercial break awaiting the announcement of the Top 15 semi-finalist. At this point we go to another commercial break and the remaining titleholders are sent to a seating area on stage right to wait for the next 11 semi-finalist to be called out to re-compete. Rebecca gives a thumbs-up to everybody as we wait for the results. And the remaining 11 semi-finalist chosen by the judges are, Miss Michigan, Miss Delaware, Miss Arkansas, Miss Hawaii, Miss District of Columbia, Miss Iowa, Miss New York, Miss California, Miss Florida, Miss Kentucky, and Miss Tennessee. These 11 contestants plus the 4 contestants voted in by America will be the Top 15 semi-finalist that will re-compete tonight for the title of Miss America. The remaining contestants are placed in a large seating area at stage right to watch the pageant. Mario introduces Kristen as we get ready to begin the Miss America Finals on Saturday night. Your Top 15 after their Swimsuit Competition on Saturday night…Which Is reduced to the Top 12 to include Miss Michigan, Miss Tennessee, Miss Hawaii, Miss California, Miss Georgia, Miss Florida, Miss Kentucky, Miss District of Columbia, Miss Indiana, Miss Iowa, Miss Arkansas, and Miss New York. The Top 12 re-compete in Evening Gown… And then hurry off the stage to get ready for their Talent competition of which only 10 will compete as their names are called out and 2 will be eliminated. Meanwhile on the other side of the stage all the contestants and chatting and hugging each other. While waiting for the Top 12 to change into their Talent costumes, some of the Miss America National Princesses are interviewed. They were down in front of me so I shot this picture off of one of the TV monitors. All of the Top 12 waits patiently on stage left for their name to be called out to perform their Talent tonight. Miss District of Columbia I the first to perform her Talent tonight. Miss Hawaii is also called on to perform her Talent on Saturday night. Miss Indiana is excited to hear her name called out to perform her Talent. Katie does an outstanding job of singing “Via Dolorosa”. During a commercial break, Miss California warms up on stage. Miss California is also called on to perform her Talent. Your 10th and final contestant to be called out for Talent is Miss Michigan. After Talent is completed the start interviewing he contestants over on stage right and Rebecca is one of the first ones they picked for an interview. Everybody wave at your favorite person ladies… It looks like Rebecca wants to say something else to everybody. Your Top 10 come back out on stage for the next competition which is the On-Stage Question where the field will be reduced to the Top 7 contestants… The Top 7 gather at stage left while Mario announces the next phase of competition. While the contestants are doing a group hug, Mario turns to them and says, “Ladies, you have 2 minutes to get into your evening gowns and be back out of stage”. At which point all their heads spin around and say “WHAT?... 2 MINUTES!!! “We are so outta here” as they head back to the “Big Tent” behind the stage to change “QUICKLY… Meanwhile all the other contestants who were released earlier to go change start to come back out on the stage. And Rebecca is already in her place ready to go… Kristen makes her final appearance as Miss America 2008. It’s been a GREAT year Kristen… Thanks for all the memories… Mario has the results and is about to call out the Runner-Ups and the Winner… Miss Georgia is called out as the 1st Runner-Up. Only 3 remain standing and only 1 will receive the Miss America crow and title. Who will it be?? ITS MISS INDIANA, KATIE STAM!!! WAY TO GO KATIE!!! I think she is very happy… Next comes the new Miss America Banner… And then the new Miss America crown… Yes… She was surprised… Katie’s first walk as Mss America… Still in shock!!! Friday morning begins with a trip to the Miss America “Shopping Extravaganza” at the Planet Hollywood Hotel. While shopping at the Miss America Trade Show there arose such a clatter out in the hall that I rushed to see what was the matter where I found 32 “Teen Queens” all dressed in pink. These are just a few of the Teen State titleholders coming to the trade show for an autograph session today. While inside the trade show gowns and swimsuits were flying off the racks to find the “perfect size and color” for next July. Here are Nicholle and Jordan in “matching material” gowns. Sydney with Teen Tennessee and Teen Utah at the Teen State Titleholder’s autograph session on Friday afternoon at the trade show. Teen crowns as far as the eye can see… Meanwhile over at Regalia, measurements are being taken… And new gown orders being taken for Jessica and Nicholle… Nicholle tries on another really cute dress at Regalia. Nicholle and Jessica with Carry Oneal and David Lane with Regalia. Thanks for all the help… Nicholle with Teen Kansas, Teen Florida and Teen Delaware at the trade show. After a HEAVY morning of shopping it’s time for some lunch at P. F. Changs. After a late lunch/early dinner Jessica said she needed some makeup so guess where we went? Jessica and Nicholle in front of the Planet Hollywood Hotel entrance. Getting ready to head over to the Paris Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. Nichole and Jessica at the entrance to the Paris Hotel. And under the Eiffel Tower… Crossing over one of the Las Vegas Blvd. bridges going over to the Bellagio. Inside the Bellagio heading back to some very expensive shops. OK ladies… Since you have never been to Vegas before or seen this show, WATCH CLOSELY and you will be amazed as we get ready to “Fly Me To The Moon”… WOW!!! This is really COOL Mr. Jim… Smile ladies and make this picture even prettier… And we’ll finish off the Bellagio Fountain Show with a silhouette shot of Nicholle and Jessica against the fountains… Jessica and Nicholle on the Las Vegas Strip… And swinging on the entrance gate at the Bellagio Hotel. And back in the Planet Hollywood Mall we find “Captain Jack Sparrow” and “Michael Jackson”. And back in our Summer Bay Condo we give Nicholle and Jessica their pink Miss America blouses with a rhinestone crown on it. I think they liked them… We get an early start Saturday morning and head back to the Miss America Trade Show at the Planet Hollywood Hotel. Jessica got with Regalia again and sketched out some changes for her new evening gown. Nicholle with Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, Taylor Fitch at the MA Trade Show. And then went shopping for jewelry before we went to our next adventure in Vegas. We end up at the Luxor Hotel and for those of you that have been with us before; you know what we did… After our “Magic Experience” inside the Luxor Hotel we have a bite of lunch and grab another quick picture outside the Luxor while waiting for our car. It ran several times over the last few hours before the pageant. It was nice to see them showing current footage. The other Ads were of last year's girls on stage and Kirsten being crowned. This was all current Prelim footage. It was really interesting that they would show a MAOT Teen and then the Contestants were shown in Opening Number. Very exciting to see Syndey featured when the Commercial opened, then the voice over her singing and she was still being shown. Emily was recognized for her work on her platform, "Uniquely Me - Promoting Self Esteem in Adolescent Girls" and she will receive a $6,000 scholarship. The announcement was made at Planet Hollywood during Thursday's Miss America press conference, and marks the last day of preliminary competition for the 2009 Miss America Pageant. It has become her mission to create an online support network that went live on the Internet in 2007; she is a founder of BCDaughters.com which is an international website that serves as an outlet to support Breast Cancer victims. She has worked on fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society and has also become a legislative ambassador and has lobbied in DC for cancer research. The second runner-up is Miss Alabama Amanda Tapley, whose personal platform is "Music For a Cure." Amanda worked with her brother to create a CD with some of her favorite piano pieces and all proceeds were donated to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. She created a CD with a music software program and raised over $4,000 for their pediatric research. Amanda also performed a benefit with family members that raised another $13,000 for research. Winning the crown Harris named 'Miss OCU' By: Alaina Stevens Oklahoma City University Magazine -Issue date: 12/3/08 Section: LifeStyles Heather Harris's dream came true, and she said it is helping her grow as a person. The vocal performance junior was crowned Miss OCU during the annual pageant Nov. 22. There were 11 contestants competing for the title this year. "I'm so blessed and honored to be Miss OCU," Harris said. "It was a huge surprise. "I was very happy, so happy I can't even express it. I'm still in awe about it." As Miss OCU, Harris will receive three semesters of free tuition, as well as free room and board. The first runner up was Hailey Ford, music theater graduate. Winning the title has helped Harris learn more about herself and grow as a person, she said. It also took a lot of dedication and hard work. "I've been in the Miss America system for the past seven years, and by participating in the organization it has helped me grow and realize that whatever you want in life you have to work hard for it," she said. At last year's competition Harris was first runner up to Molly Colvard, but it didn't deter her from her dream, she said. "My dream was to become Miss OCU," Harris said. "I worked hard and believed that I could do it. "Because of my willingness and my belief in myself, my dreams came true." Harris's platform for the competition was bully harassment. She said she chose it for personal reasons. "I was bullied as a young child," Harris said. "Throughout the time I was bullied I felt very alone. I kept to myself and was very insecure. "Once I spoke up and got some help the bullying ceased and I became a stronger person." It's been encouraging for her to speak out about bullying, Harris said. It also has helped her grow even more, she said. The next stage for Harris is preparing for the Miss Oklahoma pageant, which is in summer 2009. To get ready Harris said she will work on staying fit and healthy, stay informed on current events, work on her interview skills, and look for a song to perform. Despite the stresses of working toward another title sometimes you have to relax, Harris said. "Through all of the staying healthy and fit you have to let go and have fun," she said. "You have to know that all that you're doing is your best." Her roommate is 14 year old Miss Teen New Mexico and she does not have a director. Her talent is also vocal. Her mom and grandma brought her to MAOT. Sydney feels blessed to have Lydia prepare her and take her there.Tonight they had their kick off celebration event from 8p-10p, so things are up and going now! The hotel we are staying at this week does not have internet, so I've had difficulty finding someplace to get the net. Next week, we are changing hotels and I hope to have better luck! Friday the girls had rehearsals all day... 9 hrs! Sydney said they have 4 production #s and there is ALOT of dancing! yikes for the singers! :) But, she said she had fun. Then, it was off for an evening of food and fun! Medievil Times was amazing! They introduced each titleholder individually and they each walked one by one across the floor of the coliseum carrying their large state flag! Pretty spectacular with all the spot lights, cheers, etc! Then, of course the 'jousting matches', etc took place. Our knight was the BLUE knight. We all had fun cheering him on... although he got his butt kicked, he still looked good! :) The girls had fun regardless! Afterwards, we got to spend at least 45 min with the girls, taking photos, etc. It was very cool to chat with all Sydney's new found friends and seeing all the other girls mingling. Sydney wore a hot pink sequin top with dark denim jeans and her new boots from Justin (which she ADORES)! She looked wonderful! Sydney has really bonded with several other girls, like CO, AL, PA and WA. I felt like her personal photographer b/c she wanted so many pictures with all her new friends... but it was so much fun watching her enjoy herself and developing these lifelong friendships! The evening culminated with a group shot... and OH, a little girl (or shall I say 'fan') wanted a pic with Syd and Teen CO. Very cool! Buses loaded and they were off! Sat all day rehearsals. We are on cloud 9 right now as you can imagine, but I know what it's like to be home and not knowing all the details, so I'll try to do my best to fill you in... Ok, so all the girls come out from behind the audience and go down the aisles carrying their state flags and wearing their opening # outfits (which are adorable white bubble skirt cocktails compliments of Tony Bowls). Sydney looked dynamite and I'm sure Jim will post photos in a bit. I took pics, but with my little camara, I know Jim's will be MUCH better (plus he has a press pass and is on the front row! :) ) All the contestants introduce themselves much like they did at Miss America, where they say a "little cute something" about their state. Syd said something about Texas' diversity and all it has to offer and ended with 'ya'll come visit!' (or something like that :) ) It was cute, but I was too excited to remember it word for word! Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999, was the emcee for this evening's prelim. The competition started with aerobic wear. This year the girls wear either red or blue SHORT cotton shorts with a white tshirt, trimmed in the color of their shorts and the T says MAO Teen on it. So, all the girls are dressed identical, with just the color option. And they do this fitness 'routine' of sorts. They have some sort of hip action thing at the beginning :), then they walk to the side stage and do 4 lunges and biceps curls, then they walk center stage for a pose and walk off. Honestly, the 'modeling' is really making or breaking these girls scores (I'm assuming if I were a judge). B/C some look very awkward. Tomorrow will be Syd's night to show us what she's got! :) Then, talent--- I felt talent was not a very strong group as a whole. But there were a few strong girls, with Oklahoma being a stand out by far. Her tap dance to Sweet Georgia Brown was sensational!!! I didn't care for the quality of her track, but it didn't matter b/c the dancing was so phenomenal! Last, but not least, was EG and OSQ. The girls do OSQ in their EG. First, they model, then they walk side stage to the emcee and draw a question. The contestants wrote the questions themselves, so the emcee announces what state the question is from first, then reads the question. Syd got a question about what is a pressure that teens face today. She answered it very confidently and naturally and her reply was 'standarized test scores'. She said (in summary) that too much pressure is placed on standardized testing and that students in America focus too much on memorizing information rather than learning for the sake of learning and really absorbing the information being taught. (of course, she said it MUCH more eloquently than I)She looked radiant... wore the same gold gown she won EG in at Texas. The scores for EG and OSQ were combined for the winner tonight... so she won 30% tonight! so far... so good! And yes MD won AW and OK won Talent, so congrats to them as well! Syd was super excited and I'll post some candid shots we took at visitation as well. She had 6 princesses (and moms) there tonight to support her in addition to: Jim and Sherry Hanson Syd's family: her 3 sisters (Melissa, Michelle & Michaela), her dad (Juan),my mom (aunt 'De'), my dad, nicki sue (cousin) and alannah (2nd cousin)(and both are princesses too), and of course myself (cousin) Lydia & Jean of course Megan Miller and her mom Taylor Lowery and her mom It was a very fun & exciting night!!! The Teens rehearsed for 9-10 hours today at the convention center and then came back to the Rosen Hotel for a “quick” unannounced pool party for a little over an hour before they went back up to eat dinner about 9:15 PM. The Teens did get to go to the MAOT Trade Show before the pool party and pick out a few items for their wish list. The trade show opens to the public tomorrow. We had dinner about 9:30 PM with Meghan Miller and her Mom, Ellen before coming back to our hotel at Disney World. The Teens have rehearsal most of the day tomorrow and then the first preliminary competition is tomorrow night. Hopefully I can get some pictures of Sydney tomorrow night at visitation and we will try to send them when we get back to our hotel. – Jim – –Sydney shows off a few of her “selected” items from the MAOT Trade Show during the Teen Pool Party on Monday night. Teen Colorado, 14 year old Caley-Rae Pavillard shows Sydney some of the pictures that she took at Monday’s MAOT rehearsal. Sydney and Caley-Rea have become really close friends this week at MAOT. More pictures to come… Thanks – Jim… The opening of the Tuesday night MAOT competition had each state titleholder coming down the aisles carrying their state flag. This is the 1st pictures that I got of Sydney with the Texas Flag And the 4th pictures as she got closer to the stage. And the 6th picture as she was up on the stage. And the last picture with the flag as she went off the stage. Sydney before the opening number. Sydney along with the other Teen contestants as they walk the runway. Sydney as she introduces herself on Tuesday night… Sydney at the end of the Opening number. Caitlin being introduced before the on-stage competition. She has been Amazing! Promoting Caitlin's Closet. Her dad is a pro football player. She's a former National and State Title Holder in other systems too.
