Subject: Think twice before purchasing magicjack

Here is my personal story I experienced with Magicjack phone service.
On Sunday, May 11th, I saw an advertisement on TV offering people a 30 free day trial for magicjack, a device that is plugged into the USB port of a computer and you plug your landline phone into the other end of the magicjack device. It requires you to have a broadband high speed internet service. You can only purchase the device if you give your credit card or debit number. It's a deal that offers that you pay $19.95 a year with no more monthly bills EVER. At the end of the 30 day trial period, they take $39.95 out of your bank account for the cost of the magicjack device. If you aren't happy with the device, you can return it during the 30 day free trial and you'll get a full refund. They claim that your bank account would not be affected until after the free trial. This deal includes free long distance, free caller i.d., free voicemail, free directory assistance, and free call waiting. After we received our magicjack device, I got online to chat live with a Magicjack agent just to make sure our account wouldn't be affected before the free trial was up. Chatting live with an agent on Magicjack website is the only way to get a hold of Magicjack because they have no phone number (except the 800 number to purchase the device, which is autimated), no email address or any other way to get a hold of them. On Tuesday, May 27th, I figured I would check out our bank statement online and found out to my dismay that we were in the negative in our account and I couldn't see why. I called my bank and the teller told me that Magicjack had an amount of $46.90 put on hold in our account. Number 1: they told me that our bank account would not be affected until after the 30 day free trial and we only had the magicjack device for 5 days. We had to pay $30.00 for the overdraft, which we didn't have because of Magicjack putting that money on hold. Number 2: they took out $46.90 when they said they were going to take out $39.95 AFTER THE FREE TRIAL. After we caught on to them, we sent our device back. When they received the device back on May 22nd, I got online to live chat with a Magicjack agent about our $46.90 refund. The agent told me our refund was processed and we should get an email confirmation of our refund and that our refund would be direct deposited between June 5th-12th. Well, those days came and went and no refund. I got online to chat with an agent and she told me it wasn't processed yet and that she would process it right then and there. She said we would get our refund back in 2 days. The 2 days came and went and no refund. I went online again and spoke with another Magicjack agent. This time, all of a sudden, she couldn't find my account and asked for debit card numbers again. I said NO WAY! She ended up finding it another way then. She told me she prioritized my refund and I would have it the following day. The following day came and went and no refund. I got online yet again to speak with an agent. At the beginning of our chat, she told me it wasn't processed yet and that she just processes it and we would have to wait another 7-10 days. Then towards the end of our chat, she told me our refund was processed on May 25th and that we should have already recieved it. She told me that she couldn't send the email confirmation because I gave her the wrong email address (she typed a bunch of numbers and put magicjack.com after the numbers, saying that is the email I gave them). In reality, I gave her my husbands email address, which I gave when I ordered the device, and I had to use that email address (my husbands) to login everytime I needed to chat with a Magicjack agent. She said that Magicjack did everything they could do on their end to send our refund back and that it was my banks fault that it didn't go through and for me to call my bank. I did so, while still chatting with her, and the bank teller told me that Magicjack did not send any refund back or else it would have shown up by now. I told the agent that, and she didn't say anything she just terminated our chat session. They terminated the chat sessions several times once they realized I was on to them. I have done some research on the internet and I have found that I am one amongst hundreds of consumers that have this particular problem with Magicjack. We even had to get new debit cards because we just don't trust that Magicjack wouldn't take anymore money out without our knowledge again. I had called the attorney general about this issue and the secretary told me that the more people that file complaints about Magicjack, the more likely something can be done. So, if any of you are experiencing similar problems with the company, file a report with the attorney general. The number is : 1-800-441-2555.
