Subject: rectal temp- cool male nurse

As a child, my temp was taken rectally every time I had a fever. I wasn't sick much so the experience was a great one for me. In seventh grade, I was admited to the hospital for a hernia opperation. The pediatric ward had three rooms: One with six beds for the older kids, one main room for younger kids with cribs and small beds with rails, and one private room off the main room. Another boy, around 9 years old, had been admited just before me and occupied that room. I was by myself in the larger "big boy" room when the the first male nurse I had ever seen came in and took my vitals. When it came to the temperature taking, he said,"we'll have to get you in the butt." I looked at him with a suprised and emparased look then he added, ". . .This time." That made me feel better so cooperated fully. He had great respect for my privacy that he even pulled the curtain just before lowering my PJ bottoms. He used great care in lubricating and inserting the glass thermometer into my anal hole. True to his word, all remaining temps were taken orally. I also had the privilage of passively watching as the other kids' temps were taken periodically. This experience brough back some memories for my not-so-distant past (at that time) of playing "hospital" with other school kids I knew. That 9 year old moved in the room with me for companionship. I haven't seen that nurse or that boy again but remember them fondly.

Were all the other nurses cooperative? Did they take your temp rectally or orally? The reason I ask is because each shift has different nurses assigned to each patient.

I wasn't so lucky. I was put in the children's ward at 13 and though we did have male nurses the rectal temps were apparently law. I was in for tests, stomach xrays. I didn't know what a GI series was. So later I nearly died of embarrassment when he showed up to "prep" me for the xrays and barium.

That room was about as private as the lobby. LOL

During the 1950s I was in a catholic hosp with pneumonia, I was 12 in an open ward. All the nurses were nuns. All temps were rectal, taken while on your side. One night a young novice came in to take my temp.She pulled the curtains around. She was cute I had a crush on her. She told me to stay on my back and as I was wearing one of those open back gowns she had me pull up my legs and spread my knees. she lifted my gown and saw my up and growing erection, Ifelt my face heating up. At that point in time, no one questioned a decision to take a youngster's temperature rectally in a hospital or a medical practice or clinic. Today, only in very isolated communites where glass thermometers are still used where temperatures are taken with glass thermometer (one of which I have an association) are youngster's temperature are taken rectally.
