Subject: I saw a friend get his rectal temp taken too!!!

Well actually, it was my cousin. I was spending the weekend with them when my parents were out of town. It was a hot summer day and we were outside all morning playing basketball, baseball and swimming in their pool. My cousin began to complain about not feeling well. We went inside to tell his mom (my aunt) and she immediately said to wait in the living room while she got the thermometer. My aunt returned and the first thing I noticed was she had a jar of vaseline with the thermometer. Could my aunt really still take my cousins temperature the baby way, i thought. After all I was 2 years younger and my mom had switched me over to oral when I was 9 years old.
I guess since I was family no one asked me to leave the room. I watched stunned as my aunt loosened my cousins bathing suit so it fell to the floor, leaving him completely naked. She told him to lie on the couch and sat down next to him. At this point my cousin began to express his displeasure about the situation, but my aunt assure him that I too still got my temperature taken in my bottom. I never made an attempt to correct her and just nodded my head in ageement. My cousin now accepted his fate and lied there quietly while my aunt applied the vaseline to the stubby end and separated his cheeks. I tried not to stare as she slowly pushed the themometer into his bottom and held it there between her fingers. Although I was excited I felt stangely bad for my cousin to be lying naked in the middle of the living room with a thermometer sticking out of his butt while his younger cousin looked on. His predictament only got worse when his sister and her friend came inside to see him there. My cousin did have a fever after all so I got to watch the same scenario unfold 4 or 5 more times over the weekend. I told my mom about it when I got home and made her promise not to tell her sister that she hadn't taken my temperature rectally for 2 years. I thought that would only make my cousin feel worse.

There remains is a child medical care clinic that still uses glass thermometers to take temperatures. It is an austere facility for financially disadvantaged families that do not qualify for public medical assistance. It is located in an area so isolated not just geographically but also economically and culturally.

It is highly efficient for both oral and rectal temperatures to be taken in a large alcove adjacent to the waiting room prior to being seen by a medical practitioner. There are no visual barriers between the alcove and the waiting room. There seems to hardly any resistance from adults that brings a youngster into the clinic to have him lie face down on a table, and with trousers and underwear pulled down to his knees, to have a glass rectal thermometer mounted in his unmasked rear end. To improve efficiency oral temperatures are often taken at one time.

Generally, rectal temperatures stop and oral temperatures begin at the age of six years old. However, an older patient believed also to lack the capability of keeping a glass oral thermometer intact in his mouth is required to submit to having a rectal temperature taken. Less common, an older patient that is capable of maintaining a glass thermometer in his mouth responsibly but also has certain behavior issues reported may be denied to have his temperature taken orally and therefore is also required to have his temperatures taken rectally with a glass rectal thermometer. Regardless on the reaction of the patient to having a glass rectal thermometer securely lodged in his rear end that suggests that it is a setback for him, it is always in his best interest because it insures an absolutely successful outcome and that an extremely accurate reading can be captured from the patient rear end.
