The exam subjected to your daughter was probably first a sigmoidoscopy and then ano-rectal manometry.

In this last exam balloons are inserted and pumped up. The response in the anus is recorded on measure scales or by computer registration. This exam is fairly frequently done on children by problems like constipation. There are also more extensive versions of the exam where the whole colon i tested this way.
