Answers to worksheet1

The hitchhiker performs an illocutionary act indirectly by coming up with an utterance that, interpreted litterally, expresses the intention to perform another illocutionay act, which is inquiring about a ride. At face of value, the utterance seems to benefit the riders, as he uses the phrase “last chance”.
The maxim of quality is not observed since the hitchhiker cannot prove that there won’t be other hitchhikers along the way. So this may not be a driver’s last chance. Also, calling the action of giving a ride ‘a chance’ is something that other people are not likely to agree with. The maxim of manner is also neglected since the hitchhiker doesn’t explicitly state that he wants a ride. A driver may not have time to read and consider what he is saying with that sign. This also proves that he is using too many words for that context.
