Worksheet 1:

A)The illocutionary force is to get a ride. It is achieved indirectly as the speakers use creativity and good humor in his attempt to convince the drivers that they should not miss the “last chance to pick someone up” , as if it were a good opportunity.

B)Apparently this utterance benefits the drivers as if “to pick someone up before the motorway” were somehow an advantage or privilege.

C)If we consider that the speaker has chosen a different and creative way to draw the drivers’ attention all Grice’s maxims were observed:

Quality: Only say what you believe to be true and have evidence for.

Quantity: It is as informative as required to his purpose of persuading the drivers through a humorous utterance.

Relevance: it is relevant to the proposed interaction.

Manner: It is not prolix or ambiguous and it is as brief as possible considering his humorous purposes.
