Food for thought

After discussing the topics, we concluded that neither all grammatical items should be taught discursively nor all items should be treated at sentence level. As Carol Miranda mentioned, in the genitive case, for instance, it is much easier for students to analyze sentences rather than grasping that through discourse. The practicality of teaching through discourse analysis must be looked into carefully otherwise the teacher’s role as facilitator will not be observed. Another grammar item that we would like to mention as being difficult to teach through discourse is “possessive pronouns”. It will be a lot easier for students to understand them at sentence level rather than through discourse analysis. If students may get lost analyzing the grammar point through discourse, teachers must take over and guide them through a safer route!
