Besides learning new vocabulary what it is also important is that they are learning to use a dictionary in a foreign language. It is common to see their difficulties using it, at least some of mine have, mainly beginners.
I do with my students the Vocabulary-Dictionary time…. It’s very short. Sometimes at 5 minutes at the end of a class or as a warm up, depends, I open the dictionary and choose a page randomly. Then we read a word, try to understand the definition, try to create a sentence using it look for the others that they have in the same page. Sometimes is very good. It is an opportunity for them to see a word that it is not common to their context and they probably wouldn’t face it.
I use this with private students so I have plenty time to clear their doubts. I don’t know if it would be effective in a large class.
