It came as a relief to me all the comments on translation because I used to work at a language institute where I couldn't use translation with my students because the principal thought translation is bad for learning. And in this course I've learnt how useful translation can be for us in the process of teaching and learning.
Of course we won't "lose" our focus (communication) but translation can help a lot concerning genre. As Helen has said about formal letters, students need to be aware of differences between English and Portuguese to be able to use words, expressions and structures appropriately. We always have to remember how important culture and context are for learning a language.
