Subject: Feedback from the group

Dear mates,

First, we’d like to thank you all for the precious contributions you've made to our forum. We'd like to say that we also agree with Luana and Antonio when they highlighted the importance of going beyond the characteristics of the texts while working with genre. Another important point was made by Gustavo when he said that more than just presenting the features we should let students work on this discovery so they can really understand the structure and meaning that underlies each genre.

We want to add that working with genre has been considered a new trend in education and, as previous ones, it takes time until it is completely understood and well conducted by teachers in classrooms. What we’ve noticed, taking the comments into account, is that some teachers still feel insecure about how to deal with genre because we did not have the same opportunities when we were at school. So, now as teachers we face some difficulties in leading students through this path. We believe that’s why some of them tend to keep on talking about the characteristics rather than the meaning and the purposes of each genre. That’s because students are usually seen as readers only; not as writers also.

In addition to our discussion, we’d like to say that in August, “Nova Escola” magazine published an article about Genre. It was not about second language learning but still very useful. The article is very clear and we concluded that the language learning/teaching is still the main objective through the work with genre. According to Beth Marchuschi, “Saber utilizar a língua é o que mais influencia a qualidade textual.” That’s why focusing in characteristics only will neither guarantee that students will learn genres effectively nor enable them to develop a critical point of view. If you became interested in the article, we can send it to you through e-mail.
