Hi Horatio

I recently read Running for the Hills and was overcome with the memories that you evoked from my own childhood growing up in Llangattock.

I clearly remember you in school (you were a year above and Alexander was a year below me in my brother class. The description of Pat Leonard was spot on and I remember that mental dog you had which you mum always kept in the car whilst she dropped you both off. Your Mum was legend! I recall her always in wellies, a navy padded jacket, chewing gum and her long hair blowing madly around as you all squashed into what I seem to remember as being a Peugeot 205?!

Can I ask the name of the farm that you grew up on as I walk regularly along the Beacons Way path from Cwmdu to Crickhowell (where I have finally settled) and I am curious to place exactly where you were situated. The expression and description you conveyed of hill farming sheep brought back many memories of assisting my grandparents with lambing on their farm in Llangattock, especially the orphan lambs and particularly the "skinning" trick which always fascinated me.

Finally, I must thank you for helping clear up a family argument we had with my father during a game of Scrabble one Christmas. He tried to use the word "ronk" and whilst we all knew what he was referring to, the Oxford dictionary ruled him out! I have since been able to reassure him that a well respected writer and journalist who used to attend school with us, uses the work in the correct context!

Best wishes to you and your family.

Kind regards
Sarah
