Queen Elizabeth II makes first visit to Slovenia
18 hours ago

BRDO PRI KRANJU, Slovenia (AFP) — Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip arrived in Slovenia on Tuesday for their first visit to the former Yugoslav state since it declared independence in 1991.

Shortly after arriving at Ljubljana's airport, the royal couple was greeted by President Danilo Turk at the Brdo pri Kranju castle, 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of the capital, and inspected an honour guard.

During the two-day visit, the 82-year-old queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will stay in Ljubljana and visit on Wednesday the Lipica Stud Farm, known for breeding Lipizzaner horses since 1580.

On Tuesday evening, Turk will host a state banquet in their honour at the Brdo castle, the site used for official meetings when Slovenia held the European Union's presidency earlier this year.

The royal couple's visit has been announced as a sign of recognition of Slovenia's successful transition from communism to democracy and integration in the EU.

Slovenia joined the EU and NATO in 2004. It was the first new member to adopt the euro, in 2007, and hold the bloc's presidency, in the first half of this year.

The official program of the visit will conclude on Wednesday evening while the royal couple is scheduled to leave for Slovakia on Thursday morning.
