PTO TO HOST WORLD’S GREATEST KID INVENTOR

On Wednesday, March 22, 2000, the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) will host the grand prize presentation ceremony for the Green Giant National Veggie Eating Invention Contest, a contest designed to educate kids on the important role vegetables play in a growing body.

The National Veggie Eating Contest is part of a yearlong celebration marking the 75th anniversary of the Jolly Green Giant – one of America’s most recognized icons of the 20th century. The contest was open to children in kindergarten to fifth grade. To enter, kids were asked to submit a description, a drawing of a photo of an original gadget, tool or apparatus designed to make eating vegetables enjoyable. The six finalists won an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC to compete for the grand prize – a $5,000 Green Giant Scholarship. Five national finalists will each win a $500 scholarship.

Q. Todd Dickinson, Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks, and Anne Chasser Commissioner for Trademarks, are among the panel of judges who will choose the grand prizewinner from among the 6 finalists.

"Green Giant and The Pillsbury Co. should be proud of the work they are doing with children to spur invention," said Q. Todd Dickinson. "One of PTO's goals is to reach out to our future and provide children with the tools they need to be creative, sparking growth in intellectual property for years to come. This contest does just that."

Over 6 million patents have been issued since the first patent in 1790. Last year PTO issued 161,000 patents and registered 104,000 trademarks.
