Subject: Carol's comments on CCP

To begin with ¡V this is the subject I am most unfamiliar with, hadn¡¦t even heard of and found very interesting in its justification, if I may put it like that: Its need in order to avoid ¡§miscommunications and misperceptions based upon differing norms of interaction.¡¨ The consequences of such communication failures are dramatic, as studies show, and are referred to with words such as ¡§injustice¡¨, ¡§power¡¨, dominance¡¨, ¡§discrimination¡¨ and so on.

¡§Host community¡¨ was a new and nice sounding term as well. In IP the newcomer will attempt to acquire the necessary norms, right? (One way perspective) Whereas in CCP both individuals from distinct communities who meet are considered, each with their own rules and norms (two way perspective), ¡§a clash in expectations¡¨ many times taking place. Got it.

On methodology: two systems must be compared within this field of study in order for the research to be considered cross-cultural, am I right? For instance, contrasting how people apologize in the US and in Japan.

¡§Domains¡¨¡K Spheres of life in which our (communicative) interactions occur¡K Hmmnn¡K

Jumping now straight to the conclusion ¡V the thought that we need to begin noticing and understanding these differences in our ways of communicating right in our families or near us is really ¡K nice (for lack of a better and more academic word ƒº). All of us have the experience of miscommunication in our daily lives, not necessarily with a ¡§foreigner¡¨ but usually with close people ¡V and in the end ¡V it is mutual understanding that we seek isn¡¦t it. A most interesting field of study, CCP, I thought¡K
