Subject: cross cultural pragmatics ppt

Guys,
As we have seen in the two areas of research related to cross cultural pragmatics it is very important to notice the difference between them.
Both of them study cultural
contrasts across different speech communities. ILP
proponents think foreign language learners (FLL)
should adhere to native speakers’ (NS) norms.
It’s a one-way process, only the FLL has to
adjust to the norms. Assuming such a view we might be
implying that we take the NS’s norms to be superior to
the FLL’s.On the other hand,CCP proposes that members of both speech communities (FLL and NS) should adjust to each
other’s communicative norms. In other words, it takes
both cultures to be equal in terms of valour, belifs, norms, etc. Then, this differences need to be percieved
as very significant ones and we, as teachers, should help our students to notice them, perceiving them only as differences that need to be respected.
