Los orígines del ritmo PUNTA - Andony Castillo

Aun todavía no tenemos un cálculo exacto de cuanto tiempo han practicado la punta los garífuna (negros de la Costa Atlántica de Honduras, Belize y Guatemala). Pero, seguimos investigando. Lo único que sabemos es que forma parte de sus leyes morales y lo han estado practicando hace más de once siglos.

Y lo heredaron de sus ancestros africanos. Vale aclarar que la punta también tiene un lado político, porque al practicar sus tradiciones se sentían libres por breves momentos durante la arraigada esclavitud.

El significado cultural de punta
La punta o bangidy, es una danza folklórica de la cultura garífuna. Su aparición es ampliamente natural y tiene una contextura rítmica, lo cual permite al danzante sublevar su estado emocional.

La punta o bangidy tiene un mensaje cultural, a través de la danza, muestran su dolor, angustia, felicidad, todas clases de emociones. Entonan canciones protesta, las cuales han sido elaboradas por los garífunas mismos.

Cuando los garífunas bailan punta, expresan sus sentimientos de dolor y emoción, combinados con acentos rítmicos. Eso les permite a los danzantes navegar mientras efectuan aquellas secuencias de vibraciones de sonidos rítmicos.

Cuando se baila punta, generalmente, la persona entra a un contacto espiritual y a una liberación mental. [Un trance rítmico entre movimientos sensuales de cadera mayormente, y cuerpo].

En esos momentos es cuando se olvida de sus propios problemas; son sustituídos por la emoción y felicidad. Los espectadores también quedan conmovidos cuando tienen contacto con la cultura garífuna. La verdad es que el ritmo punta es muy acogedor; es capaz de atraer a cualquiera.

Punta is a type of music found primarily in Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

According to certain scholars[citation needed], punta is the contemporary electronic offshoot of an ancestral rhythm and dance of the Garifuna people of Central America, performed during celebrations or festive occasions, with links to West Africa and an ancient rhythm called Bunda, or "buttocks" in the Mandé language (african languague). Musician and visual artist Pen Cayetano and the Turtle Shell Band introduced this new genre to the world in 1978, at 5 Moho Street, in Dangriga Town. Pen fused traditional Garifuna instrumentation including the garawon (drum), rattles, and turtle shells with modern electronic instruments. His lasting legacy, however, lies in his lyrics, which gave the political, social and economic issues of the Belizean Garifuna people a global platform, and along the way inspired a new generation to apply their talents to their own ancestral forms and unique concerns.

Today punta musicians in Central America, the US, and elsewhere have made further advances with the introduction of the piano, woodwind, brass and string instruments.

Punta is a sensual and rithm of liberty, very difficult to be performed but very easy to enjoy watching professional dancer doing it.
