Subject: i need some help with retail hierarchy (urban geography)

currently i am doing an assignment on retail hierarachy and are particularly focussing on Christaller's Central Place Theory.

is there supposed to be a relationship between the time a customer took to get to a settlement, to the time that they spend in the settlement? my teacher has suggested that there is, but i haven't found anything in texts to suggest this. i can only think of common sense that tells me because people travel further for higher order goods, they are going to spend more money, and are therefore more careful about making the purchase???
