Every musical generation repeats itself. Every ten years or so there pops up like five bands at once, a really intelligent heavy band, a popish bubblegum band, some psyco/quasi/acid band, someone who pushes the envelope and does something really mellow and smart and someone who plays faster than anyone else. all of these bands that you have mentioned are no more than rip offs. Even (and this hurts me to say) Nirvana ripped off the mid-seventies punk/"new wave" of Britain. Not the Sex Pistols or any of that shit, but the Vasalines, B-52's (yes, the B-52's), Flipper of the 80's, ect..ect..ect..
The only really origional musicians as far as mainstream music were artists like Ledbelly, Robert Johnson, artists of the 30's and 40's. Big bands were the "thing" and solo artists were laughed at. "You can't write a song without a rythm section." they'd say but the poverty stricken invented the blues anyway. Bleus split into country and rock. everything after is in 4-4 timemg or 3-3 timing. Soundgarden and Rush's 7-2 or 13-6 time signatures were definitive of new thinking
but not origional. Now (and no I'm not a fan) Queen is one of the most origional bands in the last 25 years. That shit was just fucked up and yet easy on the ears.
Korn did NOT destroy rock, they and the Deftones helped to re-invent what is considered "heavy". Down tuning has beed happening for 300 years and "standard tunind is NOT standard in anyway so as far as complaining about downtuning you can stop now.
Anyway I'm rambling.
