Ozzfest fucking ruled... 40,000 people there, it was insane.

The first band up was Pressure 4-5 (on the third stage), they kicked ass (especially for the first band of the day). Their CD isn't even out yet, which is weird. They're melodic, and still pretty damn heavy, which is cool. Definitely getting that CD...

Next up was Pure Rubbish, and they sucked so much ass. They're about 15 years too late on the trend meter, because they're punkish hair metal, the worst combination in the world. Their lead singer/lead guitarist had every cheeseball rawk star cliche down pat, it was disgusting to watch. Everyone in that band is younger than us, it was weird...

American Head Charge came up next, on the second stage, which was in the middle of a fucking parking lot (?!), but oh well. They sucked ass, too. One guitarist was a Munky-wannabe, looked just like him. The band as a whole wants to be Slipknot without the jumpsuits and masks (and the kick-ass music, for that matter), with fucking seven guys in it (two keyboardists?! Come on...). They were just another excuse to be heavy.

Spineshank came up next, and they did a pretty decent job. The lead singer wore some cheesy-assed shades, but we'll forgive them. The drummer had all these bars that he hit to cue a drum loop, which was a pretty lame way of doing it, just fucking hit the drums... along with that came the fact that he's left-handed, which is VERY odd to look at. They were the first band that the crowd knew the words to their songs (except for me, of course), so that was cool.

Hatebreed came up, and these guys were insane. Their mix was shit, absolute fucking shit, it was all bass drum and bass guitar. And if you've ever heard Hatebreed, you know they're straight-up hardcore, just one riff after another. They were heavy, got some insane moshpits, and threw out "Yankees Suck" t-shirts (in Boston? Very nice touch...), which I found amusing because in some live pics, their lead singer is wearing a Yankees hat... When their big banner got raised behind the stage, their was a huge roar from the crowd, and having seen the logo, it felt like a Nuremburg rally...

Next up was Nonpoint, and they kicked so much ass! They were the first band that I really knew, and they were they heaviest, the best mixed, and overall, just the best. Their singer, Elias Soriano, was fucking awesome, he's letting his dreads grow out, so he really had something to throw around on stage. Their drummer had a huge kit, and he used every inch of it. Their guitarist (Andy) was awesome, he kept looking at me the whole set (I was right in front of him), and he even threw me a pick at the end (which landed on someone else, but oh well...) of the set. I ended up meeting Elias after the Mudvayne set, he's a really cool guy.

We sat out No One and Beautiful Creatures, because what I'd heard previously did nothing for me, so we came back for the tail end of Drowning Pool's set. Might I suggest not being in a mosh pit for a song that's a)REALLY popular at the time, b)REALLY heavy live, and c)ABOUT a mosh pit? I hope I can, because it was fucking BAD. We had to go straight through the pit to get back to the front of the stage for Taproot, and it was wild, and kind of fun. I got my nose banged up, but no bother. Taproot was awesome, they were the first band that I'd known about for over a year. Mike, the guitarist, looked like he was 12, it was weird. Steve was awesome, he was the first one to really talk to the audience. They played a new song, which was a treat. I kept shouting at Mike, and he gave me knowing looks everytime I did it, which was kind of odd, but still cool that he heard me.

We sat out Union Underground because they're Powerman 5000 rip-offs, and made the Mudvayne set. These guys flat out stole the whole fucking show. They were so good, they were hypnotic. I'd been into them beforehand, but not to the point where I loved them. Now, they're easily one of my favorites. If you ever get the chance to see them, do it, it's almost a surreal experience (even in the broad daylight). Kud was like a preacher, in his usual concert garb of baggy overalls and wife beater. His make-up has changed, it's now just white face paint, and a bowler hat (a la his favorite movie, Clockwork Orange). Gurgg was just plain great, he moves so differently on stage than anything I've seen. Ryknow was fucking sweet, he plays better live than on record (which is a tall order unto itself). And sPaG... wow, he kills his kick drum with his double bass pedal. He's insane!

On the mainstage, Black Label Society sucked (and shouted at them several times to tell them that), so did Crazytown (told them to go back to rehab... :). Disturbed was pretty good, although I'm not into the music. They covered fucking Pantera (at Ozzfest?! Everyone there knows all Pantera!!), which took balls. Chester from Linkin Park, and the singer from Drowning Pool came out to help out on this one. Linkin Park rocked the house, they're much heavier live than on CD. Papa Roach was OK, much better on CD.

Slipknot was fucking crazy
