I could not agree more. This union has always been splintered by the DOC and by separation of facilties accross the state. Each facility has its own "local aggreements". So there is no consistancy!
It starts at the facility level where the DOC uses uniform officers for "Superintendent picks or Frozen Positions". They use these same people to investigate us at the facility level and statewide...
I was a pick for 8 years..did it for daycare and time off for family. I worked with some really great guys and girls who just wanted to be home on the weekends. I also worked with some people that I wouldnt piss on if they were on fire...it is a good thing they wear blue inside.
I was and have been a steward for several years. for a time when i was a rookie and now later in my career.
My point is that we make the choice so early in our careers to work against the union and we dont even realize it. If weekends and holidays are worth it to you, then you should leave the union. it cant be both ways. If the world was perfect and people were honest and managers and captains didn't lie then everyone would be a pick! But a pick at the average joint has to put up with pressure from management to act a certain way. How many picks were made to be FTO's? Most in my facility would rather not be one.
I don't begrudge anyone. do what is good for your family...but doing so means that you stepout from under the umbrella of the union. Pay an agency fee or join a management union. This is just the beginning.
Past Eboard members let the Captains slip out of our grasp. We could have had higher career ladders and eliminated captains investigating us..because they would be in our union and cannot investigate their own. Management would have to. New captains that are not grandfathered would have to be leutenants before they could be Captains...this would put experience, time and most of all integrity back into the position of Captain.
So because we didn't..but I say we try to get them to switch to our union...keep yours freinds close and your enemies even closer...
Anyway these are some of the ways that we splinter this union from the beginning of our careers...it is not intentional, it just happens.
But in order for this union to grow it must be more stricter. With Management, the cons and our own.
We have tons of money! Use it to put ads in the media to alert the media of the DOC's cover ups. Who do you think leaks the names of the few boneheads that are in our union to Fox news...just saying..
The only reason that management doesn't respect staff is because they don't get any heat from boston to lay off us. If our union courted more polititions and played the political game better than it would be them putting heat on boston to leave us alone..we haven't got there yet.
Cons do the things they do because there is no serious reprecussions for their actions against us. Anyone can go to the court and file charges against a con. I have done it for the facility against a con once before. Our union can demand once again through our real political contacts that the courts issue more time to cons who assault us our file false charges that cause irreprebale damages to our work and personal lives..after a very short amount of convictions, the assaults from non lifers would fall. It is a start..
We as a body are our own worst enemys...we rat out each other, we harrass each other, we assault each other...and management laughs all the while. Very few managers are honest and have integrity (spelling)...if your gonna pick on my spelling you have more issues than just union issues.....
If you wear blue or have hands on inmate status then you should be in our union. if not, sorry but you shouldn't be.
if as a whole the body decides that one day many of us should decide to use sicktime all on the same day do to some bonehead decision the DOC trys to implement, then the CPO's, Maintnenance guys and coaches can serve the cons chow while in lockdown. Sorry nothing personal.....
again my point is that we are splintered in so manys ways that it is virtually impossible to get everyone on the same page!
The state police do well because if collectively they dont go to work who will do their work?
CPO's dont show up? Secretarys get ready!
Coaches don't show up? CPO's can pass out the basketballs...
Maintenance don't show up? Use a contractor..it happens more than not anyway...
Point is that our union, when created was created for the right reasons..but was put together hastily...and it hasn't been rectified since....in fact when current and past E board members needed to do something...like maybe toss other E board members off the board, they don't follow the constitution to do it, it doesn't allow it they way it has been done in all of the instances in which it occurred. They just do what they want and through the use of the quarom (spelling, again you know my thoughts on that)they can implement anything they want when it comes to the day to day running of our union. 12 times per year we have the ability to change the direction of Our Union. To make our elected officials to be accountable to us. Not in a negative way, but in the way that an organization that is supposed to serve, protect and forever have the lives of its brothers and sisters in its sight.
just realized I am rambling..plus wife walked in and demands attention...stay strong...get involved...ask questions...
