The Pur Explorer has a .004 micron filter that will filter out both bacteria and virus. I have not found anything to top that as yet ...
Here's the problem as I see it in three parts:
1...if you are "mobile" you really need the Pur Explorer if you plan to put it in a bug out kit for use where the water might not be reliable...but note that its capabilities are limited and its filter needs fairly frequent replacing ... not a problem in the woods, but a definate problem for home use where larger volumens of water are concerned.
2...you really need a home filter that will take out the chlorine, chemicals, etc... from a larger body of water, such as in a cistrin or a swimming pool etc. I'm looking into the Katadyn TRK at this point for that purpose, but have not heard back from the Katady people as yet...so I'm not satisfied and that decision is still pending.
3...if you are "stationery" you need to look into some form of long range water distillation ... solar seems to be the most feasible thing offered at this time as it requires no fuel, no filters, etc. You can find plans for a solar distillation unit on the Garry North site. It is a tried and tested unit that can be easily home built.
In the end, one would be better off using all three under different circumstances, as no one thing is going to get the job done in all possible scenarios.
