Subject: shots across receptionist's lap

Throughout my childhood and adolescence every visit to the doctor ended with what I feared most. I had to pull everything down to my ankles and bend over the receptionist's lap for an injection (penicillin when I was ill and booster shots when I wasn't) that often left me unable to sit down. It wasn't the pain of the shot that I dreaded so much as the childish humiliation of having a girl watch me get it in the bare bottom and the older I got, the more embarrassed I felt. When very young I didn't even know what was really happening because I was encouraged to think what I felt was the receptionist pinching me back there. When I grew older, she sometimes really did pinch me - on one cheek to distract me from the needle going into the other.
