Subject: Greenway Saved

Assemblyman Marc Molinaro (R,C,I-Red Hook) today pointed out that Hudson Valley residents achieved one success in an otherwise dismal state budget – the saving of the Hudson River Valley Greenway. Governor David Paterson proposed to “consolidate” the Greenway into the state Department of State; a move that sparked opposition from around the world including the Czech Republic and Italy.

“The merger of the Hudson Valley Greenway into a bureaucratic state agency would have meant certain doom for a program that has developed regional partnerships and a shared commitment to smart growth, sustainable economic development and careful environmental stewardship,” said Molinaro. “Preserving the Greenway as an independent entity is a victory for all residents who believe in its mission and understand that its ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for all those who call the Hudson Valley home.”

Molinaro points out that the Greenway provides the tools necessary to streamline decision making, enhance inter-governmental sharing, stimulate our economy and leverage millions, saving local tax dollars. He points out that the governor’s proposal will not save taxpayers any money and in fact would jeopardize $1.2 million in federal aid.

“Since its inception, I have been a strong advocate for the Greenway and its cooperative community agenda, which has worked so well to bring cohesion and prosperity to the Hudson Valley. The Greenway has received tremendous support over the years from local public servants including Congressman Maurice Hinchey and state Senator Steve Saland as well as from other greenway areas from around the world who look to the Hudson Valley as a model,” said Molinaro.

“As we look to tackle our state’s fiscal woes we must be careful not to make hasty decisions that will be detrimental to the communities we serve. Now will be the time to invest in programs like the Greenway in an effort to jump start our economy and bring jobs, revenue, and people back to the Hudson Valley. Together we can build a better New York State, one that will be both beautiful and affordable,” concluded Molinaro.
