R.I.P and farewell to the blonde and rugged 1960s actor Roger Ewing at his home in Morro Bay, California, on December 18, 2025, at the age of 83, who will be best remembered for his role as Deputy Marshal Thad Greenwood on two seasons of “Gunsmoke” between 1965-67.
•
Born in Los Angeles, California on January 12, 1942, Roger was working a series of odd jobs, including as a lifeguard, before turning to acting in college. He made his debut on an episode of “Bewitched” in 1964, followed by his film debut in “Ensign Pulver”, (also 1964) as Pvt. Jackson alongside Robert Walker Jr. He followed this as Pvt. Swensholm in “None but the Brave” (1965), the anti-war film produced and directed by Frank Sinatra.
•
Then came “Gunsmoke”, appearing in the episode “Song for Dying” which impressed the producers so much, they offered him the role of Clayton Thaddeus “Thad” Greenwood, and he joined the regular cast appearing in 65 episodes of the hit show.
•
At the time, there was a contract dispute between star James Arness and CBS, and Roger Ewing’s character was created by CBS with a view to replacing Arness should they deem it necessary.
•
By 1967 the disagreement had been resolved, and Roger’s character was written out of the show. Roger had been a “Gunsmoke” fan while in high school, where he had appeared in a parody of the show whilst in his senior year.
•
He also guest-starred in television shows including “Rawhide”, “The Farmer’s Daughter”, “The Eleventh Hour”, “Room 222”, and “Death Valley Days”.
•
In 1968, he turned up as Bachelor #2 on an episode of “The Dating Game” when a then unknown Lindsay Wagner picked a different bachelor to be here date. The following year, he joined Glenn Ford in the Walt Disney family western “Smith!” and was seriously considered by John Schlesinger for the title role in “Midnight Cowboy”, which ultimately went to Jon Voight.
•
Roger Ewing retired from acting in 1972, last appearing in the film “Play It as It Lays”, written by Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne, with Tuesday Weld and Anthony Perkins, and became a professional photographer and active in local politics.
