The daughter of songwriter Ray Gilbert, she started out as a model in New York, before returning to California where she was signed by Paramount Pictures on a seven year contract after a studio executive saw her knockout performance on stage at the Mocambo nightclub in 1952. • Tall and slender she continued her singing act whilst the studio publicity department did its upmost to publicise its latest find. "Pulses raced last night when Joanne Gilbert slinked onstage in skin-tight black sequin pants and went into her sexy routine," wrote columnist Jimmy Fidler observing her one night at the El Rancho in Las Vegas. • Born Joanne Beverly Kalin in Chicago, Illinois on July 17, 1932, her father would go on to win the Academy Award with Joanne’s mother, lyricist Allie Wribel for Best Original Song for for "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" in Walt Disney’s animated full length feature "Song of the South" (1946). A• Joanne made her film debut at Paramount with a small bit in "Houdini" (1953), starring Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, followed by the musical western "Red Garter" (1954). • Joanne was dropped by Paramount the following year and married gag writer Danny Arnold after a two-year engagement. The marriage ended in 1956. • Joanne then threw herself into a nightclub work whilst acting on screen with supporting roles in "Good Morning, Miss Dove" (1955), "The Great Man" (1956), and "Ride Out for Revenge" (1957). In 1958, she won her biggest opportunity as the female lead in the office based satire "The High Cost of Loving", opposite José Ferrer who also directed the film. • Joanne married a second time to producer Edward Louis Rissen in London in 1959. The same year, she lost out on a tip role in the forthcoming Broadway musical "Gypsy", starring Ethel Merman. • Joanne divorced Edward in 1964 around the time she retired from acting. For many years she lived in Seattle, Washington. After her parents divorce, Ray Gilbert married actress Janis Paige in 1962. He died in 1976 aged 63.
